
Kuzbassrazrezugol (KRU) started works at its Kedrovsky open-pit mine to launch an environmental restoration test site to research innovative technologies for bioremediation and advanced recovery of affected territories. Climatic and geological conditions in various areas of the Kuzbass region will be recreated on 3 hectares of the site.
The initiative was spearheaded by KRU, while the project is being implemented together with Federal research center for coal and coal chemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences. The test site is designed to select among the best available innovative techniques for rehabilitation of natural landscape of coal-mining regions so that these methods could be gradually integrated into the businesses of KRU’s open-pit mines. The research works at the site will be carried out until the end of 2021.
KRU is the largest producer of high-quality coal in the Kuzbass region (Kuzbass). The company incorporates 11 open-pit mines and 1 underground mine, located in the Kuzbass. The annual coal production is 45-50 million tonnes. The integrated management system (IMS) of KRU is certified in compliance with the international standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
